Personal Story:
At the outbreak of war Aubrey attempted to join the Canadian Air Force but his application was rejected. In 1940 he joined the Queen's Own Rifles of Canada, serving in France and Holland. During heavy fighting in Holland he singlehandedly overcame the garrison troops of three German buildings, saving his men and capturing these important objectives before being hit by a sniper. In recognition of his actions that day, Aubrey was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross. He is buried in Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery, the Netherlands.
